Obituary

George A Jones, age 80, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2024 following a rapid decline of illness.  George was a loving father and devoted husband.  He was an educator, composer, and prominent musician whose lifelong love and mastery of jazz improvisation inspired the community of Western New York.

Born on May 9, 1944 in Patchogue, New York, he spent his childhood in Central Islip, Long Island with frequent trips to Manhattan to hear and play live music.  He began performing professionally at the age of 12, and played with various bands including an appearance on the Ted Mack show.

George earned his undergraduate degree from SUNY Fredonia, and advanced his education at the Eastman School of Music where he was awarded a full fellowship to pursue study in composition and piano.  Following this, he accepted a position at Rosary Hill College (now Daemen College) as professor of music theory and improvisation.  He then continued full-time as a freelance musician and private teacher.  Many of his students have gone on to become successful music teachers and performers.   He fostered in them a deep understanding of music in a unique way with his insights.

On the basis of a handshake, George found a home at Oliver's Restaurant when, then owner, Henry Gorino, hired him for a gig that endured for over 35 years.  His solo and trio work delighted friends and listeners alike with original arrangements that evolved with every new performance. Patrons of Oliver's have many special memories of George at the keyboard.  He knew and remembered everyone's song.

After joining his third child Kimberly Salle Jones in heaven, George is survived by his loving wife Meri Beth Jones, eldest daughter Melody Goetz (husband Paul), son George A "GJ" Jones III, youngest daughter Meredith Jones, granddaughter Allison Goetz, and grandson Paul Goetz III.
