Obituary

WINTER,  Herbert M., August 29, 2022 of Lawtons, NY at the age of 93 Years.
Loving husband of Virginia (Brooks) Winter.  Cherished father of Sharon (late Gary) Parsell, Francis (Bonnie), Ronald (Jodell) Winter and the late Herbert Lowell Winter.  Grandfather of 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.  Brother of the late Donald (Pauline) Winter, Allan G. Winter and Eleanor (Floyd) Petrie.   Friends may call Sunday from 1-5:30 PM at the Wentland Funeral Home 10634 Main St. (Rt. 62) North Collins, NY where funeral services will be held at 5:30 PM.
Herbert Michael Winter was born Monday, April 8, 1929, in North Collins, NY and he died on
Monday, August 29, 2022 at his home. He was 93.
Herb was the 3rd of 4 children born to Edwin and Mary Winter. His formative years were spent
working on the family farm, going to country school and later to school in North Collins. He told
many stories of farming with horses and then tractors including harvesting with a thrashing
machine.
Herb spent many Saturday nights at area square dances. It was at Woodside that he met
Virginia Brooks and they married in 1950. He was very proud of the home he built in for his
family on Route 62 that they still live in today.
Herb's first job away from the farm was for Concord Nursery where he made many lifelong
friends and learned his fine horticultural skills including grafting and experimenting with growing
various fruit and nut trees. Next he worked for NY State as a core driller. Later he worked for
Agway blend plant which he retired from after 30+ years.
Herb's love of life included woodworking, gardening, nature, and his animals. As he worked
outside with his cows and horses he always had a dog by his side-Lucky and Savage to name a
couple. He was Mr. Fix It. His friends and family would look for Herb if something didn't work
right. His kids learned that if you broke it - you fixed it!
Herb loved to tease and get a rise out of anyone! You could find him going the wrong way
around a square dance circle or making clever figurines out of wood. He loved many kinds of
food but he liked ice cream and homemade vanilla was one of his favorites which was hand
cranked at many gatherings. Camping with family and friends in the Adirondacks was pure fun
for Herb, although he may have cussed a bit when the camper was overweight from Mom
wanting to make sure she packed everything that was wanted or needed. Herb enjoyed hunting
with his boys and he relished spotting wildlife of any kind.
Herb was preceded in death by his son Herbie, his parents and brothers Alan (Delores) and
Donald (Pauline) and his sister, Eleanor (Floyd) Petrie. He is survived by his wife of almost 72
years, Virginia, his daughter, Sharon (Gary) Parsell of Arcade, NY, and sons Francis (Bonnie)
Winter of Springville, NY and Ron (Jody) Winter of Great Falls, MT. He also leaves many grand
and great grandchildren.
